VERTICULTURE

Verticulture comes from two main words, vertical and culture, that can be understood as vertical gardening. As shown on the figure, this cultivation system can be applied in a narrow area. It saves the land, particularly in urban area which the availability of the land is more and more and more smaller.

However, not everyone knows what  verticulture is and how this system can be run. Farmer only need big pipe about 1 meter length. The pipe is perforated in every side with certain distance. Make the pipe stand in land and use holder if needed. Fill it with soil and dung (fertilizer), then cultivate the seed in the pipe hole.

It was amazing, when I joined Yayasan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Pertanian Nasional (YP3N) Yogyakarta in 2010, to teach some communities in Yogyakarta to apply this cultivation system. Moreover, working with great people from Gadjah Mada University, which most of them are professor, was a new experience for me.
